Why This Process

Men’s work is often largely insight focused, but some measure of accountability is usually considered necessary for the work to be complete. While we spend most of our time focusing on insight, this process temporarily suspends insight and pretends you are 100% ready to implement your plan for change.

How It Works

Step 1: Describe the Change

The process asks, “What would change look like?” assuming you are done reflecting and ready for change. Be explicit: list 3 concrete changes you might be ready to make.

Don’t worry if you think you need more insight to know exactly what needs changing. The idea is to go 100% into change mode, as if you were 100% ready. Dream big. No one is going to hold you accountable for making these exact changes. Instead, focus on designing powerful changes that might make sense for someone else in your situation — say, if you were advising your brother.

You are looking for your most complete description of change.

Step 2: Reverse Feedback

After you quickly describe what a changed situation would look like, the team “reverse feedbacks” you on your description.

Step 3: Try Again and Get Scored

You then get a chance to try again. This time, each man scores you from 1 to 5 on how complete and effective the change seems to them in addressing your needs. The scores are averaged into a total score.

Step 4: Final Canvas and Final Grade

Finally, you get one last chance to paint on the canvas, describing your change as completely and effectively as you can. The team grades you one final time, averaging each man’s vote into a letter grade:

  • 5 = A
  • 4 = B
  • 3 = C
  • 2 = D
  • 1 = F

This final grade is your “How Ready for Change Are You?” score.

Step 5: Pass It On

You then pick the next man.
